Here at Headwings we are passionate about birds and the amazing work that the organisation BirdLife do. We donate 5% of the value of all orders to BirdLife but we also try to spread the word to anyone who’ll listen. Please do take a moment to read more about them below.
Climate change and the plight of our birds
As our success gathered momentum and we became known for our feathers, we were amazed at how new feather sources began appearing, we would randomly meet people who keep birds and offered us feathers or people would donate us the feathers that they’d gathered
In recent years the issue of climate change has stimulated us to find out how our birds are affected. The devastating news that as many as 1 in 8 species of bird are considered vulnerable motivated us to join BirdLife International, a global network of advocates for the conservation and protection of Birds. We fundraise for BirdLife from our market stalls seizing the opportunity to raise awareness of the impact humans have on birds worldwide. Birds are in danger of extinction as a result of changes to habitat or climate, yes, but also as a direct result of our actions. Actions that can be changed, like the capture of 10’s of thousands of migrating songbirds in the south of France each year. The little tweeters are drowned in cognac and served as a delicacy! This tradition is not sustainable and, as the demand increases we could see the devastation of various species in just a few years.
Vultures across Africa are one of the most vulnerable bird species, considered critically endangered on the birdlife red list of endangered birds. The Vultures feed on animals who have been poisoned by farmers in an attempt to protect their livestock from predators The vultures ingest the poisoned meat and also die. From each poisoned animal 50 or more birds can be killed. The species cannot recover from such great numbers being wiped out.
BirdLife’s tireless dedication to research, and conservation has not only been an unprecedented help in discovering which birds are vulnerable, but has also, through amazing efforts, managed to bring several species back from the brink of extinction. BirdLife needs our help to fund its projects and keep fighting to change the situation for your birds. Projects like raising awareness with local governments and peoples, educating them and empowering them to take a more active role in conservation. As well as providing protection for some of our most vulnerable baby birds with 24 hour, manned surveillance posts near their nests, ensuring no predators can get to the chicks and jeopardise the efforts to revive the species.
